packman street art joburg

Anyone who follows me on Instagram will know that I absolutely love graffiti and street art. It makes me happy 🙂  When I’m travelling, or even just walking my city I’m constantly stopping to snap pics of funky street art.  In fact my header image on this blog is my photo of a street mosaic taken in Joburg’s mining district done by artist Marco Cianfanelli.

One of my first guest blog posts I was  asked to do was for the Standard Bank Arts blog on Joburg’s street art scene.  Here’s a preview… with a link below if you want to read more.

A feast of art on Joburg’s streets

“The beauty of street art is that it’s accessible to everybody. There’s a lack of pretentiousness in street art, normally associated with mainstream art forms. Joburg’s streets offer art lovers and street culture fans an increasing abundance of urban art to explore, photograph and contemplate…”

Here are a few of my street art pics taken around Joburg. I have hundreds more, but I’ll leave some for other posts!

street art maboneng

There’s street art all over the inner city Joburg, its suburbs and townships if you’re willing to look for it. Most of these pics were taken around Newtown, Troyeville and Maboneng. Braamfontein and Soweto  are also great for street art hunting.  For more on Jozi street art check out Mr Baggin’s graffiti hunter blog. You might also want to check out this post on street art in Woodstock in Cape Town.

If you’re interested in street art, I highly recommend taking a Graffiti Walking Tour of Joburg by Past Experiences, a local walking tour company that is passionate about art in the city. They offer regular short  walking tours on weekends, perfect for locals and are reasonably priced.

Meruschka I love this. The energy in this post and your pics are pure Africa magic. One day I need to explore Joburg with you as my guide.

  • I think there are lots of scope for this kind of thing to happen in Port Elizabeth as well. Its really helped turning the Jozi inner city around.

Street art and graf can really contribute to the vibrancy of a city. I don’t know much about PE’s street artists but would love to see some local street art when I am there. In Joburg the municipality / JDA has been very proactive in investing in public art in the city, and allowed graffiti artists spaces where they could write. I think the attitude of the local authorities makes a big difference to encouraging local artists.

I’m currently travelling through Eastern Europe and I’m loving the abundant and colorful street art here as well. Now I wish I had actually taken pictures of it and not only gawked at it in amazement 😉 Well better start late than never!
Beautiful post and great pictures as always.

Thanks Tiffany. I haven’t travelled through Eastern Europe yet, but I was in Berlin last year and loved the street art there. It was everywhere! I have a ton of pics, but still need to blog about it. Haha, best you get cracking taking pics of all that awesome street art. I love that the artists styles are so distinctive.

  • Hi Merushka

I absolutely love your photos of Jozi street art. Please could I ask you a huge favour? I’m doing a photo blog to promote tourism and would love to use any one of these photos. Full credit to you of course 🙂

Please let me know if you would be happy with that.
I look forward to hearing from you!

    Thanks,
    Des

So very funky. I visited Jo’burg about a month ago for the first time and it’s nice to have some context in which to put this post. I fell in love with your city and am looking for a reason to go back! 🙂

  • […] The streets of Jozi are filled with funky graffiti street art – especially in the inner-city precincts of Braamfontein, Maboneng, and Newtown. Thanks to Mzansi Girl for sharing this photo! See more of her Joburg street art photos here. […]

How freaky is that “We wont move” one!
But yes it’s amazing how street art can brighten a scary area!
I need to get over my fear of Joburg! Maybe with your help??? 🙂

  • These are amazing. The last one, in particular, which I send to you! Thanks for posting.

  • What a great collection! I too am a huge street art fan so I cannot wait to get to Jo’Burg and snap up some shots 😀
