Its a tense time for South Africans. The world’s media is on Mandela watch, with the press hounding the doors of the Pretoria hospital where our beloved Madiba is in a critical condition. We are all praying, some of us for him to stay with us because its so hard for us to let him go. A lot of us, myself included, are praying for him to go peacefully.  He gave us so much of his life, the best we can do for him for now is honour his legacy and let him go.

As the icon of our generation,  Nelson Mandela‘s image is reproduced in art over the world, most especially in South Africa.  Here are some images  from Joburg’s vibrant street art scene that capture some of the Madiba magic.

I made a promise to myself that whenever he passes, I’d fly the 23 hours to SA (and brave the crowds) for his funeral. Unfortunately, unless there’s a miracle, if it happens now, I couldn’t afford to go so I’m praying, selfishly, that he recovers.

Although I never met Madiba losing him will be like losing a beloved father, grandfather or uncle. My world will change. So I keep praying. But I also realize that it’s out of my hands.

Thanks for sharing Madiba inspired street art from Jozi!

Thanks for your kind comment Marcia. I totally understand you praying for his recovery. I have been out of the country travelling the past 2 weeks as Madiba’s condition worsened. I know its selfish of me, but though I am very ready to let him go I prayed for him to hang on until I got back. I will visit the street outside his hospital today to pay my respects. We continue to pray that he will go peacefully.

More street images please! Feelings and thoughts for Nelson Mandela flow all across the planet right now. An inspiration and peacemaker whom we can all learn so much from. A true hero for humanity.

Thanks Jon. I actually have heaps of street art images, just need to post them. Madiba’s image must be one of the most recognizable in the world. I imagine there are heaps of street art representations of him in South Africa and around the world.
