There is so much diversity in South Africa’s travel offerings. Yet most people have barely scratched the surface – visiting only the most popular destinations.
So when travel booking site Cheapflights asked me to share a couple of my hidden gems of South African travel, I was pretty stoked. Honestly it was so hard to choose – I’ve travelled extensively in Mzansi, and there are so many amazing places.
Two of my favourite destinations are The Wild Coast and The Karoo. They are both are off-the-beaten-track and hold a special place in my heart. Their stunning landscapes, rich culture and warm people make my heart sing. These are places that I return to, again and again.
Here’s what I told Cheapflights about my hidden gems of Mzansi:-
What are your hidden gems in South Africa?
My travel blogger colleagues also had some great recommendations on SA’s hidden gems – from iconic nature reserves and mountain retreats to sleepy little towns. I loved that the recommendations included the Northern Cape, Swellendam and Bulungula. I’ve actually been a lot of the places recommended in the article, but there are a few that I have yet to visit.
The whale-watching hotspot of De Hoop Nature Reserve – recommended by blogger Anje Rautenbach – has been on my list for a while (check out the epic video above!) As has Leshiba Wilderness, in Limpopo’s Soutpansberg region, famed for it’s sustainable tourism practices and it’s celebration of Venda culture.
