Oppikoppi – you Sweet Thing!

Its no secret that I like love music festivals.  I’m a huge fan of South African and African music and go out to gigs as often as I can.  I am happiest when dancing… be it under the stars, on the beach or surrounded by mountains in a beautiful African valley.  I even have a festival bucketlist, though more about that in a future post.

Oppikoppi Sweet Thing line-up

So when my fabulous friends propose we do the Oppikoppi festival in August, how could I say no?  The line-up is MASSIVE and just plain awesome. Originally a rock festival, Oppikoppi now hosts a wide range of acts including such genres as  hip hop, metal, punk, ska. folk, blues, drum n bass, dub, funk, kwaito, house, jazz, traditional and world music.  Some of my favourite emerging acts – The Brother Moves On, The Muffinz, Jeremy Loops –  will be there as well as old favourites like Vusi Mahalasela, 340ml, and Seether to name a few.  There are also some  interesting international acts –  Bullet for my Vaentine  (UK),  Enter Shikari (UK), Bombay Show Pig (NL).  The sheer size of the Oppikoppi is staggering –  this year 140 acts and 20 000 attendees are expected!

Though I prefer smaller, more intimate festivals (like Swaziland’s Bush Fire festival) than big ones, I think any true SA music fan has to do Oppikoppi at least once.  Confession time – I’m a Koppi virgin.  Sad but true. Though I’ve been to numerous other gigs and local festivals, somehow I haven’t managed to make Oppikoppi yet.  Let’s hope I can change that this year!
