Win tickets to The Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup
December 1, 2014

Cricket is my favourite sport, it must be the Indian in me. 🙂  I remember my dad taking us to international cricket games in the ’90s, after South Africa returned to international cricket post sanctions. Our extended family would go to Durban’s Kingsmead stadium braving the 30 degree heat and humidity for a chance to see our favourite international cricketers, and get them to autograph our mini bats.

Mom would pack an sandwhiches and a cooler box of iced drinks, Dad would bring along the beach umbrella and camp chairs and we would get their early to stake out the best spot on the grass.

My brothers and cousins played mini-cricket on the practice fields outisde the stadium and later we would all cool down by getting drenched under a water sprinkler.  These days my brothers and I have traded in the water sprinkler for the beer garden, and cricket matches are just as fun as they were when we were kids.

Cricket, beer and friends!

Cricket is part of our sporting heritage. In honour of the anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing, the Proteas are taking on the Springboks in a T20 game  on the 5th of December at Bidvest Wanderers. The Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup will be a celebration of Madiba’s legacy the best way South Africans know how…through sport.  You couldn’t get a more iconic event if you tried!

Most of the household names will be there, led by their respective captains: AB and Jean de Villiers. Fans will also be entertained on the day by top local artists. A signing session with selected members of both teams will also take place as well as a Hit-a-Six competition and a kicking competition.  Tickets for the match are available from www.ticketpro.co.za and range from R90-R200. The fun starts at 3pm and the game is at 6.30pm.

This event is officially the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s choice to honour Madiba’s legacy. He knew the power of sport to unite a nation and what better way to celebrate our heritage than being at the game?

Let’s see if the Springboks can bat!
